At Hemis Monastery in Ladakh
Plot summary: Arrived by plane in Delhi. By train to Kalka at the base of the Indian Himalaya. Climbed to Manali by narrow-gauge train. By bus to Manali, then a two-day overland cargo jeep trip to Leh. From Leh, Indian Airlines flight back to Delhi.

Stage two: By train from Delhi to Amritsar. Cross border to Pakistan on foot, taxi to Lahore for rendez-vous with intrepid travel companion Sarah. From Lahore to Islamabad by bus. Islamabad to Peshawar and the Khyber Pass by minivan. Peshawar north -- through Chitral, across Shandur Pass to Gilgit and Hunza Valley, then down to Skardu -- by jeep. Flight from Skardu to Islamabad, bus to Lahore, flight to Delhi, flight to London, flight to New York.
